Chris De Burgh To Play Gig In Iran

Chris De Burgh has revealed that he will perform in Iran during the summer. De Burgh, famed for singing classic love song, 'Lady in Red' (and that's about it really) will be the first Western artist to play a concert in Iran since the country's 1979 revolution.

De Burgh was so keen to live off his daughter’s fame that he super-glued their heads together.

The plan is to hold the concert at a 12,000-seat stadium complex in the city of Tehran throughout June and July.

However, there are concerns that the raunchy lyrics of his signature track will upset Muslims. The Irish crooner, responsible for penning saucy lyrics such as "cheek to cheek" could find himself in hot water with the nation's officials.

In fact, De Burgh may be flying closer to the sun than he realises. Western pop songs with lyrics are banned in Iran, although state radio sometimes plays instrumental versions. Musical regulations are so tight in the country that any Iranians wanting to record an album, stage a concert or whistle merrily to themselves need to get official permission.

De Burgh will perform alongside top Iranian act, Arian, who have been described by the industry's top critics as "a definitive combination of the Artic Monkeys, The Osmonds, Black Sabbath and Bucks Fizz."

Last month, the Iranian government announced a campaign against rap music, which it considers obscene. There have also been cause to outlaw the playing and performances of De Burgh's music for a similar reason- nobody has wanted to listen to it since the eighties.    JG
